Brahmatal Trek Detailed Itinerary
- Distance: ~300 km
- Travel Time: 10–11 hours
- Route: Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Karnaprayag → Tharali → Dewal → Lohajung
- Altitude: ~2,300 m
Your scenic Himalayan adventure begins early morning from Rishikesh, a spiritual and adventure hub nestled on the banks of the Ganga River. After assembling at the designated pickup point—usually near Rishikesh Railway Station or Tapovan Taxi Stand—you’ll embark on a thrilling full-day drive to Lohajung, the base camp for famous treks like Brahmatal, Roopkund, and Ali Bedni Bugyal.
The drive initially follows the NH7 highway along the riverbanks, offering glimpses of river confluences and deep valleys. The first major highlight is Devprayag, the sacred confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers, where the holy Ganga River officially begins. Continuing along winding mountain roads, you’ll pass through Srinagar, one of the largest towns in the Garhwal region—an ideal spot for a quick breakfast or tea break.
Next, the road climbs steadily toward Rudraprayag, another religious confluence where the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers meet. This part of the journey offers spellbinding views of alpine terrain, deep gorges, and fast-flowing rivers. Further ahead lies Karnaprayag, the last town with multiple facilities, fuel stations, and strong mobile network before you enter remote mountain zones.
After Karnaprayag, the road narrows and begins its ascent into the Kumaon–Garhwal transition zone, leading you through scenic stretches filled with pine forests, terraced villages, and apple orchards. Pass through Tharali and Dewal, small yet culturally rich villages that offer panoramic views of the Himalayas and Pindar Valley.
The final stretch from Dewal to Lohajung is a thrilling mountain road with sharp bends and thick oak and rhododendron forests. The altitude gain is noticeable as you breathe in the crisp mountain air. Lohajung, perched at 2,300 meters, greets you with breathtaking views of Mt. Nanda Ghunti and a traditional village atmosphere.
Upon arrival, check into a local guesthouse or lodge. Enjoy a hearty hot meal and take in the peace and silence of the Himalayas. Lohajung is not just a base camp but a gateway to some of Uttarakhand’s most iconic alpine trails. It’s also your first night at altitude, so take it easy, hydrate well, and mentally prepare for the trek ahead.
Distance: ~6 km (trek)
Travel Time: 4–5 hours
Route: Lohajung → Mandoli → Bekaltal via Upper Wan ridge
Altitude: ~2,970 m
Your Brahmatal Trek officially kicks off today with a scenic and moderately steep trek from Lohajung to Bekaltal, one of the hidden alpine lakes of Uttarakhand. After a nourishing breakfast, you’ll gear up and step onto the trail, leaving behind the last signs of civilization as you enter a world of high mountains, silent forests, and natural serenity.
The trail begins just above Lohajung village and quickly ascends past the small hamlet of Mandoli, where terraced fields and stone houses showcase rural Himalayan life. The climb is gradual but steady, ideal for warming up your muscles and acclimatizing to the altitude.
Soon after, you enter a dense forest section filled with oak, rhododendron, and cedar trees. This stretch is especially stunning in late winter and early spring, when rhododendrons bloom in shades of red and pink. During winter treks (Dec–Feb), you may encounter your first snow patches here, which only adds to the magical ambiance.
Keep an eye out for views of Mt. Nanda Ghunti and Mt. Trishul, which occasionally emerge through gaps in the forest canopy. The trail is rich in birdlife, making it a quiet haven for nature photographers and bird watchers alike.
After around 4–5 hours of trekking, you’ll reach the peaceful lake of Bekaltal, located at approximately 2,970 meters. In the winter months, Bekaltal is often partially or fully frozen, turning into a pristine white mirror nestled within the forest. Camps are set up near the lake, providing a serene setting for your first night under the stars.
Enjoy a warm meal, hot soup, and an early rest as temperatures begin to drop. This overnight halt at Bekaltal not only offers natural beauty but is also crucial for gradual altitude acclimatization as you prepare for the higher camps ahead.
Distance: ~7 km (trek)
Travel Time: 5–6 hours
Route: Bekaltal → Telandi Meadows → Brahmatal Lake
Altitude: ~3,400 m
Today’s trek from Bekaltal to Brahmatal takes you deeper into the Garhwal Himalayas, bringing you face-to-face with vast meadows, open ridges, and the majestic high-altitude lake of Brahmatal, cradled in a snow-lined valley.
The day begins with a steady climb through dense oak and rhododendron forest. The trail can be steep and snow-covered in winter, so use trekking poles and microspikes if required. After about 2 hours of uphill trekking, you’ll reach the Telandi Ridge, an open and expansive stretch that marks the transition from forest to alpine zone.
From here, the forest thins out and gives way to Telandi Meadows, which remain blanketed in snow from December to early March. This section is one of the most beautiful parts of the Brahmatal Trek—offering 360° Himalayan views and wide, snow-covered grasslands stretching to the horizon.
As you trek across Telandi, you’ll be rewarded with clear views of the Trishul (7,120 m) and Nanda Ghunti (6,309 m) peaks. These snow giants dominate the skyline, making this a great spot for photos and rest.
A gentle descent begins after the meadow, eventually leading you down to the frozen lake of Brahmatal, set in a peaceful bowl-shaped valley at around 3,400 meters. The lake holds religious significance and is believed to be the place where Lord Brahma meditated—giving the trek its name.
Your campsite near Brahmatal Lake offers breathtaking surroundings, especially during golden hour when the snowy landscape glows in warm tones. Spend the evening enjoying hot food, soaking in the silence, and stargazing under the pristine Himalayan sky.
Brahmatal Lake in winter is truly a sight to behold—calm, mystical, and surrounded by nothing but snow and serenity.
Distance: ~7 km (round trip trek)
Travel Time: 6–7 hours
Route: Brahmatal Campsite → Brahmatal Ridge → Brahmatal Top → Return via same route
Altitude: ~3,700 m (highest point of the trek)
Today is the most thrilling and visually rewarding day of the Brahmatal Trek, as you trek to Brahmatal Top, the highest point of the trail, and return to the same campsite. This summit day offers breathtaking Himalayan panoramas, expansive snowfields, and unforgettable ridge walks.
The day begins early, ideally just after sunrise, as you follow the snow-covered trail leading up from the Brahmatal campsite. The route starts with a gradual ascent along the Brahmatal ridge, cutting through light forest patches and wide-open snow plains. As you climb, the views open dramatically in all directions.
After around 2–3 hours of ascent, you’ll reach the Brahmatal Top, located at approximately 3,700 meters above sea level. From here, the entire Nanda Ghunti–Trishul massif appears in full glory—often dusted in fresh snow and glowing against a blue sky. On clear days, you may even spot distant peaks like Neelkanth, Chaukhamba, and Hathi-Ghoda from various vantage points.
The trail along the ridge is one of the most iconic features of the Brahmatal Trek, with dramatic drops on either side and panoramic Himalayan vistas. This part of the trek is especially photogenic, with wind-blown snow ridges, alpine silence, and breathtaking open spaces.
You’ll spend some time soaking in the views and clicking summit photos before beginning your descent. The return path retraces the same route, with opportunities to enjoy changing light, clouds, and perspective as you head back down to the Brahmatal campsite.
After lunch and some rest at camp, enjoy a peaceful evening reflecting on this unforgettable summit experience. Brahmatal Top is a true Himalayan vantage point—ideal for trekkers seeking solitude, snow adventure, and stunning views without extreme difficulty.
Distance: ~9 km (trek)
Travel Time: 5–6 hours
Route: Brahmatal → Daldum → Lohajung
Altitude: Descent from ~3,400 m to ~2,300 m
Your descent begins today as you trek back from the Brahmatal Lake campsite to Lohajung village via the scenic forest clearing of Daldum. After witnessing the high-altitude beauty of Brahmatal Top the previous day, today’s trail brings you back through forests, meadows, and panoramic ridgelines—offering a final chance to soak in the magic of the Garhwal Himalayas.
The trek begins with a short ascent and then continues as a long but steady descent through dense oak and rhododendron forests. The route via Daldum is different from your ascent trail, providing fresh perspectives and new scenery. The forest floor is often blanketed with dry leaves or snow, depending on the season, creating a surreal, quiet atmosphere.
As you gradually lose altitude, you’ll pass through shaded woods and then into more open areas with views of surrounding valleys and distant snow-capped peaks. The Daldum clearing, a popular rest point mid-way, offers a great spot to relax and photograph the lush surroundings.
The trail further descends into lower alpine zones, eventually bringing you back to the lively village of Lohajung, your base camp. You’ll check into your guesthouse and enjoy your first night back in relative comfort—with electricity, warm food, and conversations to relive the journey.

The drive retraces much of your incoming route, starting with the descent to Dewal and Tharali through narrow, winding mountain roads. You’ll pass through the Kumaon–Garhwal transition zone, with rivers, pine forests, and charming hamlets that reflect authentic mountain life.
From Tharali, the road connects to the highway at Karnaprayag, a town situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River. As you continue toward Rudraprayag, you’ll pass scenic river confluences and ancient temples along the route—each with a story to tell.
A break for lunch is typically taken around Srinagar (Uttarakhand), the largest town on this route, known for its riverside markets and views of the Ganga River. Post lunch, the drive continues down through Devprayag, where the sacred Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet to form the Ganga.
After crossing Rishikesh, the final leg of the journey takes you to Dehradun, arriving by evening (depending on road and weather conditions). Dehradun Railway Station or ISBT Dehradun will be your drop-off point.
