Chardham Yatra Overview
Char Dham Yatra – A Sacred Journey Through Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand
In most Hindu scriptures and ancient texts, the Char Dham Yatra is revered as one of the most spiritually significant pilgrimages. These four holy shrines—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—are not only sacred to human devotees but are also believed to be eternal abodes of various Hindu deities. Over the centuries, millions have undertaken this divine journey, finding inner peace, divine grace, and a deeper connection with their faith.
Every year, seekers, saints, devotees, and adventurers travel from around the world to witness the magic of Dev Bhoomi (Land of the Gods). These sacred sites offer more than just religious fulfillment—they are nestled in the pristine Himalayas and offer unmatched natural beauty, cultural richness, and soul-soothing serenity. At our core, we feel blessed to guide you on this journey, not just as your travel partner but as your spiritual companion, ensuring your experience is safe, comfortable, and deeply fulfilling.
We proudly present the Char Dham Yatra Package, a spiritually enriching and visually mesmerizing journey through Uttarakhand’s most divine locations. Whether you’re a devotee, a nature lover, or a spiritual explorer, this 9-day/10-night journey will leave you transformed.
Yamunotri Dham – The Origin of the Yamuna River
Altitude: 3,293 meters | Location: Uttarkashi District
Your Char Dham journey begins with Yamunotri Dham, the sacred source of River Yamuna, one of the holiest rivers in Hinduism. Surrounded by snow-covered peaks like Bandarpoonch and the serene Saptarishi Kund, Yamunotri offers an ethereal trekking experience. A 5 km uphill trek from Janki Chatti takes you to the temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The route can be covered on foot, pony, or mule.
Apart from its spiritual aura, Yamunotri is known for natural thermal springs, rare Himalayan flora, and a sense of untouched natural purity. If you’re enchanted by glaciers, mountain springs, and sacred legends, Yamunotri will etch itself into your heart.
Gangotri Dham – The Divine Birthplace of the Ganges
Altitude: 3,100 meters | Location: Uttarkashi District
Next, your path leads to Gangotri Dham, where the holy River Ganga is believed to have descended from heaven through the locks of Lord Shiva. The actual source, the Gangotri Glacier at Gaumukh, is around 18–20 km from the temple and is also accessible via the adventurous Tapovan Trek.
Gangotri is not only a powerful pilgrimage destination but also a visual delight, with Harshil Valley, apple orchards, and majestic Himalayan landscapes in the backdrop. It’s one of the few places where you can see faith and nature blend so perfectly.
Kedarnath Dham – The Seat of Lord Shiva
Altitude: 3,583 meters | Location: Rudraprayag District
On the third phase of the Yatra lies Kedarnath Dham, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Situated at 3,583 meters, the temple can be reached after a 16 km trek from Gaurikund. You can also hire ponies, palkis, or take a helicopter for convenience.
Legends of Kedarnath:
According to Hindu mythology, after the Kurukshetra War, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva. To avoid them, Shiva disguised himself as a bull. When the Pandavas discovered him, Shiva dived underground, leaving only his hump visible at Kedarnath. The temple was later established at this sacred spot. Adi Shankaracharya is also believed to have re-established this shrine in the 8th century.
During the trek, you’ll pass through scenic checkpoints like Jungle Chatti, Bheem Bali, Linchauli, and Kedarnath Base Camp—each filled with raw Himalayan charm.
Badrinath Dham – The Sacred Shrine of Lord Vishnu
Altitude: 3,300 meters | Location: Chamoli District
The final Dham in the Yatra is Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Surrounded by the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges and located along the banks of the Alaknanda River, Badrinath is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. According to legend, Lord Vishnu meditated here under a Badri tree, hence the name.
Notable spots include:
Tapta Kund – a natural hot water spring where pilgrims bathe before darshan
Mana Village – India’s last village near the Indo-China border
Joshimath – home to the famous Narsingh Temple, believed to protect the valley and one of the Sapt Badri shrines
More Than Just a Pilgrimage
These holy shrines are not just about rituals—they are also home to rare Himalayan species, medicinal herbs, endemic flora and fauna, and unmatched natural beauty. But please remember, all four Dhams are located at high altitudes. It’s essential to undergo a medical check-up before the Yatra, especially for senior citizens and those with respiratory issues.

Trek from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri Temple
From Janki Chatti, you’ll begin the 6 km trek to Yamunotri Temple, which typically takes 2.5–3 hours depending on your pace and fitness. The trail is well-marked and moderately steep, winding through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and deodar trees, offering spectacular views of the Garhwal Himalayas and the gushing Yamuna River below.
On the way, you’ll cross several small waterfalls, wooden bridges, and scenic spots perfect for taking pictures or short rests. You’ll also spot pilgrims chanting hymns, creating a divine aura that adds to the spiritual energy of the trek.
Yamunotri Temple & Surya Kund – A Divine Experience
Located at an elevation of 3,293 meters, the Yamunotri Temple is one of the most revered temples in India and marks the origin of the sacred River Yamuna. The temple was originally built in the 19th century and is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the daughter of the Sun God and sister of Yama (the God of death). Pilgrims believe that bathing in the Yamuna River absolves them of sins and protects them from untimely death.
Adjacent to the temple is the famous Surya Kund, a natural hot water spring where devotees cook rice and potatoes wrapped in cloth as prasad (offering) to the deity. You can also take a dip in the warm water tanks near the temple for purification before darshan.
Return Trek & Overnight in Barkot
After darshan and rituals at the temple, you’ll trek back down to Janki Chatti, which takes about 2 hours. From there, you’ll return to Barkot by vehicle and spend the night at your hotel. This marks the completion of your first dham visit of the Char Dham Yatra.

The 100 km drive winds through pine-covered hills, river valleys, and charming Garhwali villages. The road passes through Dharasu, where you’ll see the confluence of the Yamuna and Ganga waters near Yamuna Bridge, offering a peaceful rest stop with photo opportunities.
This relatively short travel day allows ample time for rest and exploration in Uttarkashi—an ideal town to acclimatize before the higher-altitude journey to Gangotri.
Exploring Uttarkashi – The Spiritual Capital of Uttarakhand
Uttarkashi, which literally means ‘Kashi of the North’, is situated on the banks of the holy Bhagirathi River. This town is dotted with ancient temples and ashrams and is a center of spiritual learning and yoga.
The most famous temple here is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Many pilgrims perform rituals here before proceeding toward Gangotri. The temple is believed to be as spiritually significant as the one in Varanasi. Other nearby attractions include the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) and Maneri Dam, which offers panoramic river views and a peaceful setting.

Early Start for a Sacred Day
Start your journey early from Uttarkashi to Gangotri, one of the most spiritual and scenic segments of the Char Dham Yatra. As you gain altitude, the landscapes begin to shift—tall pine forests, roaring rivers, and majestic Himalayan peaks welcome you. The road runs parallel to the sacred Bhagirathi River, offering multiple photo spots and spiritual stopovers.
En Route: Harsil Valley & Bhairon Ghati
Stop for a quick refreshment at Harsil Valley, located at ~2,620 meters. It’s one of Uttarakhand’s most beautiful alpine hamlets, famous for its serene beauty, apple orchards, and peaceful military cantonment area. From Harsil, continue towards Bhairon Ghati, where a deep gorge and dense forests mark the path to Gangotri.
Before reaching Gangotri, you’ll cross the Lanka Bridge, one of the highest bridges in Asia. This route offers unforgettable views and cool mountain breezes—a perfect prelude to your visit to the holy shrine.
Gangotri Temple Darshan – The Source of River Ganga
Located at an altitude of 3,048 meters, the Gangotri Temple is the second Dham of the yatra and marks the origin of River Ganga (referred to as Bhagirathi here). Legend has it that King Bhagirath meditated for years to bring the celestial river to Earth for the salvation of his ancestors.
The temple is built in white granite and lies in the lap of snow-covered peaks. Nearby is the sacred Bhagirath Shila, where the king is believed to have meditated. Also visit the Pandav Gufa, a cave believed to be used by the Pandavas for meditation.
You can take a holy dip in the freezing waters of the Bhagirathi, which is believed to wash away sins and purify the soul.
Return to Uttarkashi
After spending time in devotion, darshan, and reflection, begin your drive back to Uttarkashi. As you descend, the sunset light bathes the hills in gold—making the journey just as special. Reach by evening and rest overnight.

Early Morning Drive from Uttarkashi
Today’s journey is a long but scenic road trip from Uttarkashi to Sitapur, the base village for the Kedarnath Dham trek. Depart early after breakfast, as the route takes you through winding mountain roads, peaceful valleys, and cultural towns of the Garhwal region.
The road descends from Uttarkashi and passes through picturesque towns like Lambgaon and Tilwara, eventually leading you to the sacred confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini Rivers at Rudraprayag, one of the famous Panch Prayags (five river confluences) in Uttarakhand.
Spiritual and Scenic Stopovers
On your way, you can take short breaks at:
Agastmuni – A small temple town associated with Sage Agastya.
Rudraprayag – A holy town where rivers Mandakini and Alaknanda merge. Many pilgrims stop here for darshan at Rudranath Temple.
The road ahead runs alongside the Mandakini River, offering splendid views of Himalayan cliffs and pine forests. This stretch is considered one of the most divine parts of the Char Dham Yatra, with multiple temples and legends associated with Lord Shiva.
Arriving at Sitapur – Base for Kedarnath Trek
By evening, you will arrive at Sitapur, a quiet pilgrim base situated just 6–7 km before Sonprayag, the official starting point for the Kedarnath trek. Sitapur has multiple accommodation options, including guesthouses, hotels, and dharamshalas catering to yatris.
You’ll spend the night here to rest and prepare for your uphill journey to Kedarnath Temple the next day. Ponies, palkis, and shared jeeps to Sonprayag are easily arranged from Sitapur.
- Distance: 6 km (Sitapur to Sonprayag by vehicle) + 5 km (Sonprayag to Gaurikund by shared jeep) + 16 km (Gaurikund to Kedarnath by trek)

Early Morning Transfer to Sonprayag & Gaurikund
Begin your day before sunrise with a 6 km drive from Sitapur to Sonprayag. From here, take a shared local jeep for 5 km to Gaurikund, the official starting point of the Kedarnath trek. Gaurikund holds mythological importance—it is believed to be the place where Goddess Parvati meditated for Lord Shiva, and the site of the sacred Gauri Kund hot springs.
You can take a quick darshan at the Gauri Devi Temple before beginning the climb.
Trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath – A Divine Himalayan Journey
The 16 km Kedarnath trek from Gaurikund is a spiritually uplifting and physically rewarding experience. The trail runs along the thundering Mandakini River, cutting through alpine forests, gorges, and glacier-fed streams. It gradually ascends through the following key points:
Jungle Chatti (4 km) – Dense tree cover, resting spots
Bheembali (6 km) – Named after Bheem of Mahabharata, has refreshment stalls
Lincholi (9–10 km) – A great spot for mountain views and rest
Kedarnath Base Camp (14 km) – Tent colonies, food stalls, helipad nearby
Kedarnath Temple (16 km) – Final stretch with panoramic Himalayan views
If you’re unable to walk, ponies, palkis (palanquins), and helicopter services are available from Phata, Guptkashi, or Sersi (advance booking recommended in season).
Arrive at Kedarnath – The 11th Jyotirlinga of Shiva
Standing at 3,583 meters, Kedarnath Temple is one of the most powerful Jyotirlingas and a core part of the Char Dham Yatra. The temple is believed to be over 1,200 years old, rebuilt by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The massive grey stone temple stands resilient amidst towering snow-covered peaks.
As per legend, Lord Shiva took the form of a bull to avoid the Pandavas. When he disappeared into the ground at Kedarnath, the hump remained behind. That sacred hump is now worshipped as a Shivalinga in this ancient shrine.
Attend the evening aarti, which is an unforgettable experience as priests chant Vedic mantras under the open Himalayan sky with glowing diyas.
Stay overnight in Kedarnath in a guest house, government lodge, or tented camp near the temple.

Wake up early amidst the tranquility of the Himalayas. If you couldn’t attend the evening aarti on Day 6, you may attend the morning aarti today for a peaceful spiritual experience. The crowd is usually thinner at this time, giving you a better opportunity for darshan and peaceful reflection at the sacred Kedarnath Temple.
Take time to admire the surrounding snow-capped peaks, breathe in the high-altitude Himalayan air, and absorb the spiritual energy of this divine location.
Trek Down from Kedarnath to Gaurikund
After breakfast, begin your 16 km downhill trek back to Gaurikund, retracing your steps along the Mandakini River. The return is generally quicker—taking about 4–5 hours, depending on your pace and rest breaks. The descent passes familiar landmarks such as:
Lincholi – Ideal for short breaks and mountain photography

Rambara ruins – A quiet place to rest and reflect on the yatra
Palkis, ponies, and mules are available for those who prefer not to walk the full route again.
Drive Back from Gaurikund to Sitapur
Upon reaching Gaurikund, take a shared jeep to Sonprayag (5 km), and then transfer via vehicle back to Sitapur (6 km). You’ll arrive by afternoon or early evening. Sitapur has multiple lodges and hotels where you can freshen up, rest your legs, and reflect on the divine Kedarnath experience.
