KGL Trek Overview
Kashmir Great Lakes Trek – A Scenic Symphony of Alpine Beauty in the Himalayas
The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is a breathtaking high-altitude adventure nestled in the heart of Kashmir Valley, and is widely hailed as the most beautiful trek in India. This 7 to 9-day Himalayan trek showcases the untouched grandeur of the region, offering an unforgettable journey across snow-capped peaks, lush green meadows, and seven crystal-clear alpine lakes. If you’re searching for the best Himalayan trek in India during the monsoon, this is the crown jewel.
Starting from the meadow-rich village of Sonamarg and ending at the ancient village of Naranag, the trail spans approximately 70 to 75 km, reaching a maximum altitude of 13,750 feet at Gadsar Pass. Each day introduces a new wonder—whether it’s crossing icy streams, walking over flower-strewn ridges, or camping beside glacial lakes reflecting towering peaks.
From the enchanting Vishansar Lake and Krishansar Lake to the remote Gadsar, Satsar, Gangbal, and Nundkol Lakes, the trek offers a rare chance to witness seven high-altitude lakes in a single route—something no other Indian trek provides with such ease of access and natural drama.
Why Choose Kashmir Great Lakes Trek?
This trek is famous not only for its surreal beauty but also for its unmatched diversity in terrain. Meadows rich in wildflowers, river crossings, pine forests, glacier-fed streams, and rugged passes come together to create one of the most scenic trekking experiences in India.
The meadows of Kashmir, covered in daisies, buttercups, and blue poppies, are at their peak from July to September, making it the best time to do the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. Despite being a moderate-level trek, it rewards trekkers with views that rival even the toughest Himalayan expeditions.

Total Trekking Distance: Approx. 70 to 75 km
Maximum Altitude: 13,750 ft (Gadsar Pass)

Why It’s the Best Monsoon Trek in India
Unlike treks in Himachal and Uttarakhand, which become risky during the monsoon due to landslides and heavy rains, the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek lies in a rain-shadow zone. This unique geography makes it safe, scenic, and ideal during the rainy season, especially from July to early September when the alpine flora is in full bloom. Meadows turn into massive flower carpets, and every lake becomes a shimmering mirror of the surrounding mountains.

Route: Sonamarg → Table Top → Shekdur → Nichnai Valley
Today marks the beginning of your real Himalayan adventure as you set out from Sonamarg, the gateway to the Kashmir Great Lakes trail. After an early breakfast and morning briefing at your base camp or guesthouse, you’ll lace up your trekking boots and begin the ascent toward Nichnai, your first high-altitude campsite on this alpine journey.
The initial part of the trail takes you through a dense forest of maple, pine, and silver birch trees, with the Sindh River flowing below, and the majestic Thajiwas Glacier peaks occasionally visible between tree gaps. This stretch is steep but incredibly scenic, and you’ll notice the crisp air getting cooler as you gain altitude. After about 2–3 hours of ascent, the trail levels out at a beautiful clearing known as Table Top.
Here lies Shekdur, a vast meadow flanked by Bhojpatra (birch) trees, with postcard-perfect views of the surrounding mountains. This spot is also famous for its wildflowers during monsoon, especially in July and August, making it a perfect rest point for snacks, hydration, and quick photography. It’s one of the few forested meadows on the trek, providing shaded rest before the trail opens into alpine terrain.
Post Shekdur, the landscape changes dramatically. The trail descends gently into a wide valley carved by glacial streams, offering panoramic views of towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and rugged terrain. You’ll follow the Nichnai Nallah, crossing small wooden bridges, slippery boulder sections, and multiple small streamlets.
As you approach Nichnai campsite (3,500 m), the vegetation becomes sparser, and the scenery becomes stark yet incredibly beautiful. You’ll set up camp in a wide open plain surrounded by rocky cliffs and beside the cold, clear Nichnai stream that flows down from the Nichnai Pass, which you’ll cross on the following day.
Once your tents are pitched and hot tea is served, you’ll have the rest of the evening to relax, explore the valley on short walks, and let your body begin to acclimatize to higher altitude. The night sky at Nichnai is jaw-dropping, with countless stars, zero light pollution, and the sound of the river as your background lullaby.
Highlights:

Trek through lush forests of pine and maple right from Sonamarg

-
Route: Nichnai → Nichnai Pass → Alpine Meadows → Vishansar Lake
Day 3 is one of the most scenic and adventurous days of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. After a nourishing breakfast and tea at your Nichnai campsite, you’ll begin your trek toward the stunning Vishansar Lake, crossing the Nichnai Pass, your first high-altitude mountain pass of the expedition.
The trail starts with a gentle ascent along the Nichnai stream, surrounded by wild alpine flowers, soft grassy slopes, and distant snowy ridges. Within an hour, the path steepens significantly as you approach Nichnai Pass, one of the highest points of the trek at 4,150 meters (13,600 feet).
This is a challenging yet extremely rewarding climb, as the views at the top are absolutely spectacular – panoramic Himalayan vistas, jagged peaks, and glacier-fed valleys stretch out in all directions. Spend some time here soaking in the views, capturing photos, and allowing your body to adjust to the thin air.
From the pass, the trail descends sharply on rocky terrain before flattening out into a wide, open valley of colorful meadows and glacial streams. This part of the route is full of surprises – marmots darting between rocks, rare Himalayan birds, and wild horses grazing freely.
As you continue your descent, the first views of Vishansar Lake appear. Nestled beneath towering ridges, the lake is a surreal sight with crystal blue waters reflecting the sky, surrounded by rolling green hills and patches of snow. Your campsite is set up on the meadows near the lake, giving you direct access to explore the area.
In the evening, enjoy hot food and rest, or take a short walk to the lake’s edge to watch the sunset paint the water with hues of gold and orange.
Highlights:
-
Ascend to the majestic Nichnai Pass (4,150 m) with stunning 360° views

-

-
Route: Vishansar → Kishansar Lake → Gadsar Pass → Yamsar → Gadsar Valley → Gadsar Lake → Gadsar Campsite
Day 4 is arguably the most iconic and demanding part of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. It’s a day filled with pristine lakes, steep climbs, and jaw-dropping high-altitude vistas. Begin your day early, ideally just after sunrise, to make the most of the views and beat any weather changes at the top of Gadsar Pass.
Start from the Vishansar campsite and trek for about 30–45 minutes to reach Kishansar Lake, the second alpine lake of your journey. Located at the base of the pass, this lake reflects surrounding ridgelines and often hosts wild horses along its grassy shores. Photography at sunrise here is unforgettable.
From Kishansar, the real challenge begins as you ascend to the Gadsar Pass (4,200 m) — the highest point on the entire trek. The trail is steep, rocky, and tests your stamina and determination. But as you reach the top, you’re rewarded with an epic panoramic view of the twin lakes – Vishansar and Kishansar – side-by-side, both sparkling under the morning sun.
On a clear day, you can even see Mount Nanga Parbat far in the distance. Take a short break here to admire the view, hydrate, and prepare for the steep descent ahead.
The descent from Gadsar Pass is long and gradual, through rocky ridges and highland meadows. Midway down, you’ll come across the hidden Yamsar Lake, another small but stunning glacial pool, often skipped by most trekkers.
Further down the valley, the landscape turns lush again with colorful flowers, alpine streams, and boulder fields. Soon, you reach the emerald-blue Gadsar Lake (3,600 m) — one of the most remote and untouched lakes in the Himalayas. With sharp peaks towering above and flocks of sheep grazing nearby, this place feels surreal.
You’ll camp a little ahead of Gadsar Lake, near the army checkpoint where documents are verified. The campsite is peaceful and surrounded by wildflowers, perfect for relaxing after the toughest day of the trek.
Highlights:
-
Witness the twin alpine lakes – Vishansar and Kishansar from Gadsar Pass
-
Reach the highest point of Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (4,200 m)

Altitude Gain: 3,600 m (Gadsar) → 3,800 m (Satsar)

After spending the night near the secluded Gadsar Lake, you begin Day 5 with a relatively relaxed yet scenic trek toward Satsar, a group of seven alpine lakes hidden within a pristine valley. The day starts with a mandatory army check where your identification documents will be verified before proceeding further.
After crossing the checkpost, the trail leads you into the untouched Maengandob Valley, a vast expanse of green meadows nestled between towering ridgelines. This stretch is carpeted with wildflowers during the summer months, and you’ll often encounter grazing flocks of sheep and local shepherds known as Bakarwals.
The trail is a mix of gentle ascents and open, undulating terrain. As you move ahead, keep an eye out for wildlife and rare alpine birds that frequent this high-altitude region. About midway through the trek, you’ll pass through boulder sections and glacial streams, where good trekking shoes and balance come in handy.
After a few hours of gradual climbing, you enter the Satsar basin, a mystical landscape surrounded by jagged peaks and high-altitude pastures. The name “Satsar” means “seven lakes” – although not all are always visible, depending on the season and water levels.
Your campsite is set up near one of the larger Satsar lakes, with incredible views all around. The reflection of clouds and peaks on the lake surface makes for surreal sunset scenes. This remote spot is perfect for evening exploration and relaxation.

Day 6 of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is both visually stunning and physically engaging. You leave behind the mystical meadows of Satsar and set your sights on the majestic twin glacial lakes of Gangbal and Nundkol, located at the base of Mount Harmukh (5,427 m) – one of the holiest peaks in Kashmir.
The day starts early with a walk through a rugged boulder zone followed by a long, continuous ascent to the top of Zaj Pass (4,150 m). The climb can be steep and demanding in parts, especially on loose rocks and gravel paths, so trekking poles and a steady pace are essential.
Upon reaching Zaj Pass, you are greeted with the most breathtaking panoramic views of the trek. From the summit, you can gaze down at the emerald-blue waters of Gangbal and Nundkol Lakes, and on a clear day, the towering, snow-clad Mount Harmukh reflects in the waters like a divine mirror.
The descent from the pass is a long, winding trail that cuts through alpine ridges and green slopes. As you descend, the views of the twin lakes keep getting larger and clearer, making it a photographer’s paradise.
First, you’ll reach Nundkol Lake, smaller in size but equally stunning, where locals often camp and fish for trout. A little ahead lies Gangbal Lake, the largest and deepest lake of the trek, believed to be sacred by Kashmiri Hindus.
You’ll set up camp near Gangbal Lake, where the peaceful atmosphere, reflections of Mount Harmukh, and the opportunity to explore nearby lakes make it a perfect conclusion to this epic day.

The final day of your Kashmir Great Lakes Trek begins with a mix of emotions—gratitude, fatigue, and awe. You wake up beside the sacred Nundkol Lake, its waters mirroring the morning hues of Mount Harmukh, and prepare to descend into the charming village of Naranag where your trek concludes.
The trail starts with a gentle walk across the vast Trunkhol Meadows, used seasonally by nomadic Gujjar and Bakarwal shepherds. Their traditional huts and grazing flocks offer a last glimpse into high-altitude pastoral life in Kashmir.
After the meadows, the descent begins sharply. You enter a dense and ancient pine forest ridge, where the trail drops continuously for several kilometers. The route is moderately steep in places and can be slippery during rains or early mornings due to moss and loose soil. This section requires patience and control.
As you descend through the forest, listen to the sound of chirping birds, flowing streams, and feel the temperature rising with each kilometer. The transition from alpine to sub-alpine forest is gradual but visible, with changing vegetation and air density.
Eventually, you reach Naranag village, a quaint settlement known for its ancient 8th-century stone temples, now in ruins. After check-out and a brief rest, you board your pre-arranged vehicle for a 2–3 hour drive back to Srinagar. The drive offers views of the Sindh River Valley and Himalayan ridges you crossed days earlier.
You’ll arrive in Srinagar by late afternoon or evening, where comfortable hotel rooms and Kashmiri cuisine await to end this magical trek on a high note.
