Kedarnath is a famous pilgrimage site located in the state of Uttarakhand, dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is part of the Panch Kedar. This temple is located in the lap of the Himalayas, in Rudraprayag district, at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet).

Important things about Kedarnath:

This temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Kedarnath is the most prominent among the Panch Kedar. The other four Kedars are – Madmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath and Kalpeshwar.

Day 1 –  Haridwar to Sitapur

  • Early Morning:

    • After breakfast, leave early for Sonprayag, the base for the Kedarnath trek. This journey will take around 10-12 hours by road. You will pass through scenic towns like Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Agastyamuni.

  • Evening:

    • Reach Sonprayag by evening. Check into a guesthouse or camp for the night.

    • Relax and prepare for the trek ahead. Sonprayag is a small town with limited but comfortable accommodations.

  • Night:

    • Stay overnight in Sonprayag.


Day 3: Sonprayag to Kedarnath

  • Early Morning:

    • Start the day early for the trek to Kedarnath (16 km one way). You can either walk, ride a pony, or opt for a palanquin for a more comfortable experience.

    • The trek takes around 6-8 hours, so pace yourself and take breaks as needed. The path is steep but beautiful, with views of the mountains and rivers.

  • Afternoon:

    • Reach Kedarnath by afternoon or early evening. Check into a dharmshala or hotel near the temple.

    • Spend the afternoon acclimatizing to the high altitude (Kedarnath is at an elevation of 3,583 meters).

  • Evening:

    • If you have time and energy, visit the Kedarnath Temple for a short darshan.

  • Night:

    • Stay overnight in Kedarnath.


Day 4: Kedarnath Temple Visit and Return to Sonprayag

  • Early Morning:

    • Wake up early to attend the Kedarnath Temple morning Aarti (usually around 4:30 AM). Spend some time meditating and praying at this sacred site, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

  • Late Morning:

    • Visit the Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi, located behind the temple, and enjoy the views of Kedarnath Glacier.

    • You can also take a short walk to the Bhairav Temple if you have time (4 km from the Kedarnath Temple).

  • Afternoon:

    • After lunch, start your return trek to Sonprayag (16 km). The trek is mostly downhill, which can be easier, but still requires caution.

    • Arrive in Sonprayag by evening.

  • Evening:

    • After reaching Sonprayag, you can rest or take a vehicle back to Haridwar or Rishikesh (approximately 10-12 hours’ drive).

  • Night:

    • If returning the same day, overnight travel to Haridwar or Rishikesh.

    By air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun.

    By road: Buses/taxi are available to Guptkashi and Sonprayag. One has to trek 18 km from Gaurikund, 5 km from Sonprayag.

    Some tips for Kedarnath Yatra:

    Be physically fit for trekking.

    There may be a lack of oxygen, so be careful.
